Dopo l’implosione dell’Europa, stretta nella morsa geopolitica tra est e ovest e minata dall’inettitudine della classe dirigente, prima per caso e in seguito per necessità emerge una nuova forma di aggregazione sociale.
Due secoli dopo l’implosione, la civiltà del tunnel è cosa compiuta. Il nuovo sistema sociale è ricco di individualità ma capace anche di schemi sociali complessi, dove l’ombra del futuro è lunga, i gruppi umani (e non solo) non sono troppo numerosi e il ‘pay off’ degli schemi collaborativi è maggiore di quello degli schemi del fottere. Una società dove i giochi a somma non zero sono i più convenienti.
Il bitcoin riacquista la funzione di moneta affidabile e deflattiva (forse quella per cui era stato progettato) perduta nei decenni precedenti all’implosione; quando, stuprato dal neoliberismo, era trattato come un qualsiasi asset speculativo. La sua funzione propria è riacquistata anche grazie a un blitz temporale dei protagonisti. La religione sostenibile è il pastafarianesimo, che ha fatto piazza pulita di tutte le sette pagane del passato, nessuna esclusa.
Il luogo è l’ex Tunnel di base del Brennero, diventato centro della nuova civiltà, ma anche crocevia di esperienze al limite della metafisica (se non dell’esoterismo) e luogo di soggiorno di esseri alieni e post-umani, dotati di sorprendenti qualità e proprietà.
Le città del tunnel, sorte negli ex snodi principali, brulicano di vita inedita e assumono importanza cruciale nel respingere gli attacchi che le forze esterne, gerarchiche ma disorganizzate, muovono alla nuova civiltà.
Il tono narrativo è dissacrante, ironico e parodistico, il genere letterario è un mix tra: urban fantasy e fantascienza distopica. Forse la visione di un futuro distopico inatteso; oppure un tentativo di esistenza sostenibile. Tra un plurale trinitatis, usato in modo consapevole da Draula, la teenager aliena, e la creazione del primo triumfeminato della storia, a quanto si sa, si svolge l’azione degli interstiziali. La teenager aliena parla al plurale quando si riferisce a sé stessa e ai suoi due ulteriori aspetti, usandolo in modo proprio, non come i monarchi e i papi del passato, che avevano perso il contatto con la realtà. Le triumfeminae costituiscono un team creato per trattare i termini della collaborazione tra gli interstiziali e Lucifer, il lichene intelligente che comunica tramite glifi luminosi e circolari, emessi sotto forma di ologramma dai fotofori. Lucifer cerca aiuto per essere diffuso nel tempo e nello spazio.
Le triumfeminae sono state scelte perché hanno più pazienza dei maschi e sono più disposte a capire il prossimo. La trinità di Draula è onnisciente e onniveggente, non la prima della storia ma la più interessante. Nel Tunnel ci sono androidi e mutanti post-umani che condividono un metabolismo basato sulle particelle sub atomiche, piuttosto che sui metaboliti organici. Personaggi surreali appaiono e scompaiono dando il loro colorato contributo al procedere degli eventi. Eventi che nel Tunnel vanno avanti (nella direzione del tempo) ma anche indietro. Il genio ‘vigoressico’ Marcello Baleno riesce (con ispirazione palindroma) a combinare il superamento della decoerenza quantistica con la potenza gravitazionale dei buchi neri portatili; con il risultato di indurre onde e tempo a viaggiare a ritroso.
Dopo aver respinto un ultimo attacco all’equilibrio omeostatico del Tunnel, si presentano due aruspices ambulanti (poliploidi e mutanti) portando in dote una fastidiosa divinazione per la Civiltà del Tunnel.

Chronicles from the Tunnel
After the collapse of Europe, caught between East and West and with a ruling class that couldn’t get it together, a new type of social movement emerged, first by chance and then because they had to.
Two hundred years after the implosion, the tunnel civilisation is complete. The new social system is rich in individuality but also capable of complex social patterns, where the shadow of the future is long, human groups (and not only) are not too numerous, and the payoff of collaborative schemes is greater than that of schemes based on screwing others over. A society where it’s best to play non-zero-sum games.
Bitcoin has become a reliable and deflationary currency again (maybe it was always meant to be like that). It had its function lost in the decades before the implosion, when neoliberalism ruined it and made it just another speculative asset. It’s back to normal, at least for now, thanks to a bit of a push from the protagonists. Pastafarianism is the most sustainable religion out there, having wiped out all the old pagan sects.
It’s set in the old Brenner Base Tunnel, which has become the heart of this new civilisation. It’s also a crossroads of experiences that are almost metaphysical, if not esoteric, and it’s a home for alien and post-human beings with amazing qualities and properties. The tunnel cities, which have popped up in the old main hubs, are full of new life and are really important in fighting off the attacks that external, hierarchical but disorganised forces are launching against the new civilisation.
The narrative tone is irreverent, ironic and parodic, and the literary genre is a mix of urban fantasy and dystopian science fiction. Perhaps it is a vision of an unexpected dystopian future, or an attempt at sustainable existence. Between a plural trinitatis, used by Draula, the alien teenager, and the creation of the first triumfeminato in history, as far as we know, the action of the interstitials unfolds. The alien teenager speaks in the plural when referring to herself and her two other aspects, using it in the right way, not like the monarchs and popes of the past, who had lost touch with reality. The triumfeminae are a team created to negotiate the terms of collaboration between the interstitials and Lucifer, the intelligent lichen that communicates through circular glyphs emitted in the form of holograms by photophores. Lucifer is looking for help to spread himself across time and space.
People chose the triumfeminae because they’re more patient than males and more willing to understand others. Draula’s trinity is basically all-knowing and all-powerful, and it’s not the first of the history, but it’s definitely the most interesting. In the Tunnel, there are androids and post-human mutants who share a metabolism based on subatomic particles rather than organic metabolites. All sorts of surreal characters pop up and then disappear, adding their own weird and wonderful twist to the story. Events in the Tunnel move forwards and backwards in time. The “vigoressic” genius Marcello Baleno has managed to combine the overcoming of quantum decoherence with the gravitational power of portable black holes, resulting in waves and time travelling backward.
After dealing with one last attack on the homeostatic balance of the Tunnel, two wandering “aruspicies” (polyploid and mutant) appear, bringing with them a prophecy that’s going to be a bit of a nuisance for the Tunnel Civilisation.
