Oracolo Cap. 9 – L’Oracolo

Mentre l’Oracolo usciva dalla vagina della storia (nasceva una seconda volta), il destino che non esiste, sgusciando da una costola del tempo, dispiegava l’azione necessaria per rompere la falsa immobilità; come una placca tettonica che scricchiola su un’altra mentre si carica di energia, liberandola con fragore raggiunto il punto di massimo accumulo. Non appena Daniel aveva tolto di mano il Baphomet a Ettore gli uomini di Tania più Dinis e Epaminonda avevano circondato, con atteggiamento protettivo, Daniel, Tania e l’Oracolo. Dall’altra parte erano rimasti Ettore, Dumbo che sembrava avere fatto una scelta e Isis, Ubirani era sparito.

Chiunque tra i presenti (tempo incluso) sembrava curioso di vedere che cosa sarebbe successo quando Ettore avesse tolto l’involucro usurato e rivelato l’oggetto misterioso. Come in un parto la prima cosa apparsa era la testa, sferica come soltanto il pi greco può renderla e con bagliori cromati perché la sporcizia secolare scivolava via come il residuo di sugo da una padella antiaderente. Poi emergevano le orecchie diverse una dall’altra: una evocava una femmina, non c’erano dubbi a causa degli attributi mammo-vulvari, l’altra un maschio e in questo caso l’attributo era eretto e ben riconoscibile. Il naso era bifido alla base e mentre saliva si trasformava in due ramificazioni evocanti corna che formavano un tutt’uno con le sopracciglia, sotto le quali si percepivano occhi a forma di mandorla (oriente?). La bocca a forma di imbuto orizzontale era sorretta dal mento, adeguato alla sfericità dell’oggetto; l’insieme era gradevole alla vista anche se in modo inquietante e mostrava una relazione di parentela con la sezione aurea.

As the Oracle emerged from the vagina of history (being born a second time), destiny, which does not exist, slipped out of a rib of time and unfolded the action necessary to break the false immobility; like a tectonic plate creaking on another, charging itself with energy and releasing it with a crash when it reached its maximum accumulation point. As soon as Daniel took the Baphomet from Hector’s hand, Tania’s men, plus Dinis and Epaminonda, surrounded Daniel, Tania, and the Oracle protectively. On the other side were Ettore, Dumbo, who seemed to have made a choice, and Isis. Ubirani had disappeared. As if they had agreed beforehand, Ettore threw himself at the group protecting Daniel and his gang, while Dumbo stayed close to Isis just in case.

Everyone present (including time itself) seemed curious to see what would happen when Ettore removed the worn wrapping and revealed the mysterious object. As in childbirth, the first thing to appear was the head, spherical as only pi can make it, with chrome flashes because the centuries-old dirt slid off like sauce residue from a non-stick pan. Then the ears emerged, each different from the other: one evoked a female, there was no doubt about it because of the mammary-vulvar attributes, the other a male, and in this case the attribute was erect and clearly recognizable. The nose was bifid at the base and as it rose it transformed into two branches evoking horns that formed a whole with the eyebrows, under which almond-shaped eyes (Oriental?) could be perceived. The horizontal funnel-shaped mouth was supported by the chin, which was in keeping with the spherical shape of the object; the whole was pleasing to the eye, albeit in a disturbing way, and showed a relationship with the golden ratio.

Oracolo Cap. 8 – Secret Power

Dopo il rapimento Isis viene rinchiusa in una cella

  ─ Si, proprio io.
   ─ L’ultima persona che mi sarei aspettata di vedere qui.
   ─ La vita è complicata a volte.
   ─ Già, cominciamo dalle cose semplici: dov’è il cesso?

   ─ Spiegami ancora la faccenda dell’astro di riferimento. ─ Le aveva chiesto Dumbo dopo averla accompagnata in bagno e dopo che le aveva spiegato cosa volevano da lei. Dumbo era la persona più indicata per gestire Isis, aveva un debole per lei e Daniel aveva insistito perché se ne occupasse. Le aveva portato un un panino e un caffè per renderla più collaborativa. Chissà perché Isis non era sorpresa dalle sue domande, le ci era voluto meno di un minuto per individuare la strategia da seguire per gestire la situazione.

─ Yeah, let’s start with the simple things: where’s the toilet?

─ Explain the reference star thing to me again. ─ Dumbo asked her after accompanying her to the bathroom and explaining what they wanted from her. Dumbo was the best person to deal with Isis, he had a soft spot for her and Daniel had insisted that he take care of her. He had brought her a sandwich and a coffee to make her more cooperative. For some reason, Isis wasn’t surprised by his questions, it took her less than a minute to figure out the strategy to deal with the situation.

Oracolo Cap. 7 – Algebra Esoterica

Basta saper aspettare e le risposte arrivano, l’idea emergeva dagli strati neurali profondi che non sono soggetti al pensiero che fa rumore. Non più di qualche settimana addietro Ettore si chiedeva come mai non avesse rinunciato all’appartamento con vista sull’oceano sull’Avenida Sernambetibo e il motivo ora gli appariva chiaro. Era d’obbligo dare un’occhiata al laptop di Isis per cercare di recuperare in qualche modo la sua amica. Ma era amica o fidanzata si chiedeva Ettore indugiando sull’idea curiosa che esibiva una complicazione di cui al momento non c’era bisogno; ciò che era importante era tirarla fuori dai guai.

All you have to do is wait and the answers will come. The idea was emerging from the deep neural layers that are not subject to rumor thinking. Just a few weeks ago, Ettore wondered why he hadn’t given up the flat with a view of the ocean on Avenida Sernambetibo, and now the reason was clear to him. He had to take a look at Isis’s laptop to try to get his friend back somehow. But was she a friend or a girlfriend, Ettore wondered, lingering on the curious idea that she was a complication he didn’t need right now; what was important was to get her out of trouble.

Chapter 7 – Esoteric Algebra

Se Ubirani avesse dovuto esprimere con il pensiero che fa rumore (le parole della mente) quello che era chiaro per la sua inferenza neurale, avrebbe detto che forse la serata si poteva ancora aggiustare. A prescindere (o forse a causa) da questo si era fiondato verso la rampa e raggiunto il giardino aveva individuato subito l’albero di Maria-Mole che gli faceva da riferimento, era saltato sui rami più bassi mentre l’auto di Isis usciva dal cancello e Ettore correva sulla strada per vederla allontanare in direzione dell’Avenida Sernambetiba. Con la consueta elasticità era salito su un ramo alto e si era lanciato oltre la recinzione sul marciapiede, attutendo la caduta con le mani e la flessione di una gamba. Era un appassionato dei film d’azione e non appena poteva emulava le performance dei suoi attori preferiti.

If Ubirani had had to express what was clear to his neural inference with the thoughts that make noise (the words of the mind), he would have said that perhaps the evening could still be salvaged. Regardless (or perhaps because of) this, he had rushed towards the ramp and, upon reaching the garden, had immediately spotted Maria-Mole’s tree, which served as his reference point. He had jumped onto the lower branches as Isis’s car left the gate and Ettore ran onto the road to watch it drive away in the direction of Avenida Sernambetiba. With his usual agility, he climbed onto a high branch and launched himself over the fence onto the pavement, cushioning his fall with his hands and the bend of one leg. He was a fan of action films and, whenever he could, he emulated the performances of his favourite actors.

Daniel stava concordando una ennesima fornitura di ragazze con Cielo Alto Capelli, nel grottino del piacere della villa di Santa Teresa, il cui secondo nome era Calidarium. Cielo Alto aveva seguito personalmente i lavori di posa di ogni singola piastrella del complesso mosaico irregolare e leopardato che costituiva l’ambiente. Daniel pensava che l’effetto fosse ridicolo ma si guardava dal dirlo al ministro. Alla fine dei lavori Cielo Alto avrebbe voluto sopprimere gli operai (come i tiranni orientali), i suoi legali gli avevano suggerito che un licenziamento poteva bastare; per senso dello stato e a malincuore si era adeguato. Nel Calidarium erano sempre presenti almeno tre ragazze, dovevano fingere di essere lì per caso e dimostrarsi disponibili nei confronti degli ospiti di Cielo Alto.

Daniel was arranging yet another supply of girls with Cielo Alto Capelli, in the pleasure cave of the villa in Santa Teresa, whose second name was Calidarium. Cielo Alto had personally supervised the laying of every single tile of the complex, irregular, leopard-print mosaic that made up the room. Daniel thought the effect was ridiculous but refrained from saying so to the minister. At the end of the work, Cielo Alto wanted to kill the workers (like Eastern tyrants), but his lawyers suggested that dismissal would suffice; for sense of duty and with a heavy heart, he complied. There were always at least three girls in the Calidarium, who had to pretend to be there by chance and show themselves available to Cielo Alto’s guests.

Oracolo Cap. 5 – Rocinha

Una strada della favela

Erano tornati da Cananeia con qualche interrogativo in più. Dopo qualche giorno di riflessione, Isis in piscina mentre Ettore rifletteva sulla sabbia bianca di Barra, avevano deciso di cercare ispirazione con una visita alla favela più grande del Sud America. E avevano deciso di farlo il giorno stesso dell’operazione della Policia Civil contro Comando Vermelho, con la speciale partecipazione dei narcos di Daniel. Non che fosse necessaria una guida per la visita, ma essere accompagnati da qualcuno di conosciuto era meglio. Circa a metà versante nord il loro accompagnatore (pagato in anticipo) si era dileguato dopo la prima raffica di Kalashnikov, senza salutarli.

They had returned from Cananeia with a few more questions. After a few days of reflection, Isis in the pool while Ettore pondered on the white sand of Barra, they had decided to seek inspiration with a visit to the largest favela in South America. And they had decided to do so on the very day of the Policia Civil operation against Comando Vermelho, with the special participation of Daniel’s narcos. Not that a guide was necessary for the visit, but being accompanied by someone they knew was better. About halfway up the north side, their guide (paid in advance) disappeared after the first burst of Kalashnikov fire, without saying goodbye.

Quel raggio di sole, lambiva il sandalo fatto di fettucce incrociate di pelle rossa. Non era più giovane ma era ancora una bella donna, aveva una gamba accavallata sull’altra e il piede che non appoggiava sul pavimento del Cafè Miranda era colpito in pieno dalla luce del sole, mentre dondolava complice. La Luce entrava con insistenza dalla finestra aperta su Rua Ferreira a Leblon.

That ray of sunshine grazed the sandal made of crossed strips of red leather. She was no longer young, but she was still a beautiful woman. She had one leg crossed over the other, and the foot that was not resting on the floor of Café Miranda was bathed in sunlight as she swung it back and forth. The light streamed insistently through the open window onto Rua Ferreira in Leblon.

Oracolo Cap. 3 – Zangbeto

Tra riti voodoo e strane aggressioni i protagonisti cominciano a percepire forti interessi per la loro ricerca

Visto alla tremula luce delle candele, sembrava ancora più spettrale. Il sangue rappreso era di un rosso che virava al marrone e ricopriva il volto e parte del sudario che avvolgeva il busto. Due lunghe orecchie appuntite (sembravano corna) spuntavano dal capo tozzo, reso ancor più grottesco da un naso simile a una vistosa e corta proboscide. Le orecchie erano nere e rivolte in avanti, sembrava seduto o appoggiato su uno scranno di pietra. Lo scranno si confondeva con il pavimento sul quale era sistemato e intorno c’erano ciotole di terracotta con dentro strane polveri colorate. Sparse qua e là c’erano bottiglie verdi che una volta avevano contenuto birra ma ora qualcos’altro.

Seen in the flickering candlelight, it looked even more ghostly. The dried blood was a reddish-brown colour and covered the face and part of the shroud that wrapped around the torso. Two long pointed ears (which looked like horns) protruded from the squat head, made even more grotesque by a nose resembling a conspicuous, short proboscis. The ears were black and pointed forward, and it appeared to be sitting or leaning on a stone bench. The bench blended in with the floor on which it stood, and around it were terracotta bowls containing strange coloured powders. Scattered here and there were green bottles that had once contained beer but now contained something else.

Un movimento impercettibile registrato con la coda dell’occhio aveva catturato la sua attenzione. Un saltafango lungo una quindicina di centimetri stava emergendo dall’acqua e si arrampicava su uno dei tronchi semi sommersi del complicato intrico di mangrovie tra le quali aveva trovato rifugio Ettore. Il colore era marrone screziato con bande nere e ricoperto di puntini chiari, aveva due enormi occhi rotondi con cerchiature rosse che usava per monitorare con cura l’ambiente circostante. Altri stavano emergendo dall’acqua torbida, verificato che il luogo fosse idoneo allo scopo (l’umano poteva essere una decorazione dell’ambiente) si stavano esibendo in salti sulle radici delle mangrovie; lo scopo probabile era la ricerca di cibo.

An imperceptible movement caught in the corner of his eye had caught his attention. A mudskipper about fifteen centimetres long was emerging from the water and climbing onto one of the semi-submerged trunks of the complicated tangle of mangroves where Ettore had found refuge. It was brown in colour with black stripes and covered with light-coloured dots. It had two enormous round eyes with red circles around them, which it used to carefully monitor its surroundings. Others were emerging from the murky water. Once they had verified that the place was suitable for their purpose (the human could be a decoration of the environment), they were jumping on the roots of the mangroves, probably in search of food.

Il cappello di paglia le teneva a posto una parte dei capelli neri e lunghi fino alle spalle, mentre gli altri si scompigliavano alla brezza che spirava dall’oceano. Aveva una camicia leggera che aderiva, incoraggiata da ogni folata di vento, alla pelle e faceva risaltare le sue forme. Era evidente che aveva deciso di fare a meno del reggiseno per finire la giornata. La gonna che aveva indossato al posto dei blue jeans era un utile ornamento per le sue gambe color cioccolata. Ettore si era sforzato per un po’ di cercare in Isis un difetto esoterico che giustificasse l’affermazione sui tarocchi, ma dopo poco aveva rinunciato e si era concentrato su quello che lei era e non su quello che diceva.

The straw hat kept part of her long, shoulder-length black hair in place, while the rest was tousled by the breeze blowing in from the ocean. She wore a light shirt that clung to her skin, encouraged by every gust of wind, and emphasised her curves. It was clear that she had decided to go without a bra for the rest of the day. The skirt she wore instead of blue jeans was a useful adornment for her chocolate-coloured legs. Ettore had tried for a while to find some esoteric flaw in Isis that would justify her statement about the tarot cards, but after a while he gave up and concentrated on who she was rather than what she said.

Mamy Wata aveva il corpo massiccio, la pelle nera e lucida. Aveva anche l’aspetto di una donna che prende a sberle il marito tutte le mattine prima di colazione, giusto per ricordargli chi comanda. Era dietro al banco della Casa della Macumba con le mani appoggiate ai fianchi e guardava Ettore come se pensasse: ─ e questo da dove sbuca?

Mamy Wata had a massive body and shiny black skin. She also looked like the kind of woman who slaps her husband every morning before breakfast, just to remind him who’s boss. She stood behind the counter of the Casa della Macumba with her hands on her hips and looked at Ettore as if thinking: ─ where did this one come from?

L’Oracolo

 Per caso, a Rio de Janeiro, si ritrovano le tracce di uno degli oggetti più ricercati della storia. E’ fatto di metallo e ha la forma di una testa. Può dare indicazioni sul futuro generando un esagramma, che deve poi essere interpretato con l’aritmetica binaria.   Ha iniziato il suo viaggio circa duemila anni fa in Tibet, facendo tappa in Palestina. Arrivato nel Nuovo Mondo è stato preso in consegna dagli uomini pipistrello, Indios che comunicano con ultrasuoni e “vedono” nel buio. E’ stato chiamato in passato: il Baphomet dei Templari.   

Un etnologo faidatè, aiutato da una funzionaria del Jardim Botanico di Rio, un latinista d’esportazione, un narcotrafficante internazionale e una ambiziosa “Mae de Santo”, a capo della Macumba, si trovano coinvolti nello strano affare che ha luogo nella città carioca.   A loro insaputa sono sulle tracce di qualcosa di importante, che interessa anche i politici corrotti di Rio, l’Opus Dei e gli uomini-pipistrello.

Questi ultimi hanno un ruolo rilevante nella vicenda cambiando le carte in tavola all’ultimo minuto.

The Oracle

By chance, in Rio de Janeiro, traces of one of the most sought-after objects in history are found. It is made of metal and shaped like a head. It can give indications about the future by generating a hexagram, which must then be interpreted using binary arithmetic. It began its journey about two thousand years ago in Tibet, stopping off in Palestine. When it arrived in the New World, it was taken over by the bat men, Indios who communicate with ultrasound and “see” in the dark. In the past, it was called the Baphomet of the Templars.

A do-it-yourself ethnologist, aided by a pretty employee of the Rio Botanical Garden, an expatriate Latinist, an international drug trafficker and an ambitious “Mae de Santo”, head of the Macumba, find themselves involved in the strange affair taking place in the city of Rio. Unbeknownst to them, they are on the trail of something important, which also involves corrupt politicians in Rio, Opus Dei and the bat-men.

The latter play a significant role in the story, changing the game at the last minute.
